Tis the time to get out the dried Morels. I have been digging in after the holidays and enjoying the dried Morels I had stocked for the off season. It won’t be long till the season rolls around again. Hope this year was as good as last. Enjoy the off season Morels and the new ones are on there way real soon.

I have gone out the past 2 weekends in search of the elusive morel mushroom. I am new to this and have yet to find any. Can anyone give me tips on where to look in Downriver michigan or even Monroe county?

You have to have warm rain for them to pop out. I’m in Northern Michigan where they are plentiful usually, but not yet. It’s still been to dry. They can come up anywhere, I have one spot where they grow on the edge of a field, no where near the trees!!

I have a recipe using Morel mushrooms yet here in Central Coast California I cant seem to find any. Does anyone know what other type of mushroom I could substitute that would be similar in taste and consistency?
Thanks!

thats funny ’cause i just bought some from a store in salinas for a hunting group i cooked for last week. they cost 8.99 a pound tho. there is a mushroom farmer in the fairfield area that grows only exotic and wild mushrooms and i dont remember the farms name but he has morells almost all year. spring morels are in season right now and you can also use any other wild mushroom mix which safeway, nob hill or ralphs carries ranch 99 also has a good mushroom assortment.
