Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • mesh bag
  • wooded area
  1. Step 1

Finding a place to hunt mushrooms is sometimes harder than actually finding fresh mushrooms. You need a wooded area, some are better than others. The most important thing to remember is that its not posted as private property or with no trespassing signs. If I don’t hunt on my own property, I like to ask the owners for permission. Most of them will let you hunt for mushrooms as long as you don’t leave trash. Now, you need to know when to go. Some mushrooms start early as soon as March in the area that I live in. When daytime highs get into the 50’s and 60’s and nighttime temperatures do not fall below the upper 40’s you should start watching the woods. Especially, when the dogwood trees and others start to bloom you know its time to go to the woods. It is the best hunting after a good rain and then the sun comes out with warm temperatures.

  2. Step 2

Once you get into the woods, search around the mossy side of trees, on the side of hills, look for leaves that are pushed up in a pile. Sometimes, a freshly fallen tree can produce lots of mushrooms. Old railroad tracks have always been a good place to hunt. Typically, where there is one mushroom there are more.

  3. Step 3

Don’t give up if you don’t find any the first time, it may be too early in the season. You can check out websites to find out when and where people are finding mushrooms and to post your finds. Good hunting!
